Root Canal Therapy

A root canal is a dental procedure to fix a tooth that cannot be filled, repaired or restored any other way. If the tooth is severely decayed and that the decay has reached the nerve of the tooth and/or infected it, a root canal procedure is generally the only alternative to rescue the tooth. Your regular dentist might do the root canal, but he/she may send you to a root canal specialist, who is called an "endodontist".

What to Anticipate
After the dentist numbs your tooth, he/she will use a rubber dam to help keep the surrounding tooth area dry and free of saliva. A rubber dam is simpy a piece of rubber that fits over the tooth and isolates it from the rest of the mouth.

The dentist will then prepare the tooth by drilling an opening in order to remove the decay and/or infection.

After the dentist eliminates all of the decay and bacteria, he/she will use root canal files to clean out the canals (roots) of the tooth. Root canal files enable the dentist to remove and clean the nerve in the tooth. These are small instruments that increase in diameter and fit down into the canals. A few dentists would like to wait a week or two before they finish a root canal, so they can be sure that there is no pain, discomfort or further infection. If this is the case, the dentist will systematically and thoroughly clean the tooth and would usually put some soothing medicine inside and seal it closed with a temporary filling material. At the concluding stage of a root canal treatment, the dentist will typically fill up the canals with a cork-like filling material called gutta percha. After the canals are filled, a regular filling will be placed in the tooth.

Facts to Think About
Following a root canal, a tooth can become dry and brittle and easy to break. A crown (cap) is more often than not recommended and suggested to restore the tooth properly. The cost of a root canal on a molar (back tooth) averages around $800.00 and more if a root canal specialist performs the procedure. A crown meanwhile, averages around $900.00 to be put in place. Even though the cost of a root canal is extensive, the only other option to a root canal is the removal of the tooth. If the tooth is removed, a bridge, implant or partial is recommended to fill in the space or gap because the adjoining other teeth can become crooked by shifting around. Most root canals are successful, about 95% of the time, but there is always the possibility of a new infection, which might or could require another root canal or an actual removal of the tooth.

Summary
A root canal does not have to be scary, especially if you know what to expect. You should express any questions, comments or concerns that you might have with your dentist. Make sure to keep up you're your regular check up appointments, in order to minimize and relegate the chances of having a new infection. Because of this a root canal is an investment that should be protected.
